About TAUNY

Traditional Arts in Upstate New York is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people understand and appreciate the traditions and local culture of everyday life–present and past--in the North Country. Since 1986, TAUNY has identified and documented folklife and local culture in the 14 county North Country region of New York, north of Albany, including the Adirondack Mountains, the St. Lawrence River and Lake Champlain valleys. We document with field research, photography and interviews, have an extensive archive of our own and donated work, and present in many ways: exhibits, performances, workshops and demonstrations, publications, recordings, documentary radio features, a website, and our museum store. Our research and program pursues all areas of regional folk culture–oral, musical, social and material. TAUNY has recently purchased a commercial building in the heart of Canton’s National Register historic district and is presently undertaking a capital campaign to renovate it to become The TAUNY Center, as the region’s interpretive center for traditional life. The North Country Folkstore is TAUNY’s museum shop. The Folkstore features authentic, handmade products from more than a hundred individuals and families throughout the region. It provides an outlet for local traditional artists to sell their items and a resource for visitors to find local products for souvenirs and gifts. Proceeds from Folkstore sales support TAUNY’s educational programs, including performances, demonstrations, and workshops by master traditional artists.
